Jonas Poher Rasmussen - The Art of Nonfiction
Spotlight
Hear from the director of triple Academy Award® nominated Flee, Jonas Poher Rasmussen, as he discusses documentary storytelling in non-traditional forms and the art of animation.
Over the course of 2021, the boundary-pushing animated hybrid documentary Flee has won over 65 international awards – including the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema Documentary and Annecy Cristal Award for Best Feature Film – and in a historical first, is nominated for three Academy Awards® including Best Documentary Feature, Best Animated Feature and Best International Film. So how do you effectively and creatively craft memories of the past in nonfiction? What are the challenges of animating documentary and how can you ensure that the audience will connect to complex themes through the form?
In this in-conversation session, Jonas will share the secrets of his craft as both a radio and film documentary maker, and the importance of sound design and writing for documentary. Drawing on key scenes, the session will explore modes of collaboration in animation and unconventional editing techniques, and how to carefully craft stories when personal safety and relationships are on the line.
