Levelling the Playing Field: Celebrating Trailblazers in Sports Docs
Craft Join the powerhouses behind Renee Gracie: Fireproof, Skin in the Game and Queens of Concrete, who are pushing boundaries and tackling industry inequities to create a more level playing field — on screen and beyond.
A celebration of the unique craft behind recent sports docs from an impressive lineup of local practitioners who are pushing boundaries by creating bold personal narratives that explore the broader social and cultural forces at play in women’s sport. Featuring Queens of Concrete (Concrete Dreams Pty Ltd), directed by Eliza Cox; Renee Gracie: Fireproof (Rush Films), co-directed by Frances Elliott and Samantha Marlowe; and the upcoming Skin in the Game (produced by Southern Pictures for NITV), executive produced and presented by Marlee Silva, each challenge traditional narratives, centring women in arenas historically dominated by men.
Meanwhile, despite progress in gender parity across the screen sector, this is a timely discussion given the recent 2023/2024 reporting from Screen Australia’s Gender Matters Taskforce – highlighting that women, non-binary, and gender-diverse creatives remain underrepresented in documentary funding approvals.
Join us as we celebrate these trailblazers, who despite all odds, have given us original and impactful sports documentaries as they discuss what it takes to create a more level playing field—both on screen and behind the scenes.
