Courage of Conviction in Investigative Storytelling
Spotlight
Join the directors of Navalny and Into the Deep as they discuss balancing journalistic rigour and storytelling craft when creating complex, high stakes and layered stories unveiling the events behind major global headlines.
In the last year, feature documentaries Navalny and Into the Deep have unveiled the stories behind two major global news headlines – the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and the murder of Danish journalist Kim Wall by submarine inventor Peter Madsen.
In this session, directors Daniel Roher (Navalny) and Emma Sullivan (Into the Deep) share insights into crafting investigative documentaries to uncover the truth behind these crimes. The filmmakers will reveal how to balance journalistic rigour and storytelling craft when creating complex and layered stories of the real people and events behind the headlines, and also what happens when an investigation takes you into wildly different, and dangerous directions from the original intent.
