David Farrier: Documentary of the Absurd

Spotlight Balancing humour in documentary is a fine art. Join one of Aotearoa / NZ's most fascinating filmmakers, David Farrier (Tickled & Mister Organ) as he shares his work in investigative journalism, podcasting and documentary.

Journalist and filmmaker David Farrier is the mind behind the critically acclaimed, stranger than fiction documentary Tickled (Sundance 2016) and the Netflix docu-series Dark Tourist, both of which have cemented him as a unique and original voice in contemporary documentary.

His most recent documentary, Aotearoa’s highest-grossing documentary of 2022, is the transfixing Mister Organ (Fantastic Fest 2022), which entangled him in the life of his documentary subject over five turbulent years. It reveals the perils of journalistic obsession and persistence as his encounters with the titular Mister Organ become increasingly bizarre and unhealthy over the course of the film. In this session, Farrier will explore the craft of balancing investigative journalism, documentary practice and deeply uncomfortable humour.
