In 2023, Shane Boris became the first producer since 1942 to be nominated for two Academy Awards® for Best Documentary Feature in the same year, for both Fire of Love and subsequent winner, Nalvany. His features push the boundaries of conventional form to tell timeless and cinematic stories, including the likes of King Coal, Stray, The Seer And The Unseen, and All These Sleepless Nights. His latest feature is Hollywoodgate, in which Egyptian documentarian Ibrahim Nash’at was granted unprecedented access to the Taliban after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. The documentary was nominated for Best Debut Film at the Venice Film Festival, and won the 2024 Grand Jury Award at the Full Frame Documentary Festival, before becoming shortlisted for the 2025 Best Documentary Feature Academy Award®.
As the founder of production house Cottage M, we delve into Boris’ recent work and learn how he collaborates with directors to help shape powerful narratives and innovate nonfiction storytelling. This is a rare opportunity to learn the art of creative producing from one of the industry’s most thoughtful and prolific documentary producers.
