Turn up the Volume - The Rise of the Music Biography
Craft In this electric session, creators of music documentaries making noise on the global stage share insights into crafting the biggest hits of the last year, including EGO, Finding the Voice and OneFour.
The Australian feature documentary landscape in 2023 undeniably included three standout biographies – John Farnham: Finding the Voice, Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story and OneFour: Against All Odds.
Join moderator Nick Batzias for an electric session on the making and impact of these mega music biographies with Poppy Stockell (John Farnham: Finding the Voice), Paul Goldman (Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story) and Sarah Noonan (OneFour: Against all Odds). Batzias – who is currently producing ‘Ellis Park’ (working title), a documentary about legendary musician Warren Ellis, directed by Justin Kurzel – and our stellar lineup of creators will explore the nuances of capturing musical icons on film, from intimate portraits to larger-than-life tales.
Diving into these recent blockbuster docs, we uncover the craft of telling a resonant music biography, the secrets to their massive success, and how they have proven – against all odds – the potential for our music documentaries to connect with audiences across different distribution platforms both here and abroad.
