Regionality Cairns 2023 Spotlights Documentary & Factual Talent In Far North Queensland

ONE-DAY AIDC PROGRAM UNITES REGIONAL STORYTELLERS

On Friday 28 July, AIDC returned to Cairns Performing Arts Centre for the second special edition of REGIONALITY CAIRNS, our one-day event for nonfiction screen storytellers in Far North Queensland, co-presented by Screen Queensland in collaboration with Screenworks.

An energised group of delegates from Australia to Brazil took part in the REGIONALITY CAIRNS 2023 program of sessions and Doc Chat meetings, in a day vibing with positivity and inspiring discussions around documentary craft, business and project financing.

DOC CHAT 1: MEETINGS

With the participation of 18 national and international guests, attendees heard from members of the team behind the award-winning feature documentary The Territory, Alex Pritz and Josè Kaetè; acclaimed First Nations factual filmmakers Dean Gibson (First Weapons), Dena Curtis (Rebel With a Cause), and Phil Breslin (host of First Weapons and Built to Survive); and natural history documentary and cinematography experts Dr Teresa Carrette (Scientific Synergy), and Richard Fitzpatrick and Hannah Robertson (Biopixel).

NATURAL TALENT: A MASTERCLASS IN WILDLIFE FILMING

On the industry and financing side, delegates also enjoyed practical insights from US-based international fund representatives Ianeta Le’i (Sundance Institute), Keisha Knight (IDA), and Amanda Arya (Participant), alongside Alex West of Screen Australia, plus heard from Rufus Richardson (DocPlay), Lisa O’Meara (Screenworks), Kalita Corrigan (ABC), Bernadine Lim (SBS), and Ian Lynch (Screen Queensland) on approaches to project pitching.

PITCH TOOLBOX: THE MUST-HAVES TO GET YOU MARKET-READY

Closing with a buzzing networking event overlooking the Cairns Esplanade, REGIONALITY CAIRNS included everything you would hope to expect from AIDC – but all in the space of a day!
