In recent years she’s moved into directing and writing fiction. She started her career working for Oscar-nominated film director, Mike Figgis. Early in her career, Amanda directed the multi award-winning documentary series for Channel 4, Young Black Farmers, about a group of inner-city black teenagers going to live and work on a Devonshire farm, winning a Banff Award for Best Unscripted Series.
Amanda wrote and directed the feature-length drama documentary After the Wave about the aftermath of the Boxing Day tsunami in Thailand. An international co-production funded by Screen Australia, SBS, Film Victora, The Wellcome Trust, and Discovery Europe it has sold across the world and received widespread critical acclaim, “haunting and beautiful”, said the Sydney Morning Herald.
Blue wrote and directed the feature-length drama documentary Deep Water: The Real Story for SBS. “It’s up there with the best crime documentaries of the recent past…. leaving audiences with a sense that justice still needs to be done…”, The Telegraph. Deep Water has been nominated for 14 awards, including a Best Director and Best Feature Documentary at the AACTA Awards, a Logie and Best Director at the Australian Director’s Guild. Amanda was a joint winner with Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) for the Betty Roland Prize for Scriptwriting on Deep Water: The Real Story at the 2018 NSW Premier Literary Awards.
Amanda was selected by BAFTA to be part of Elevate 2017, a prestigious scheme to support the careers of a select number of female directors.
Amanda is currently completing post-production on Step Into Paradise a feature-length arts film about the lifelong creative collaboration and friendship of fashion designers Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson for the ABC, Screen Australia and Create NSW.
She also has a drama series in development with Sky TV in the UK and a feature film in Australia.
